CVES Nurses’ Mission Statement
The goal of school nursing is to support all students in a way that allows for optimal learning and personal success in the school setting. School nurses provide quality healthcare, promote health and safety, use clinical judgement in practicing case management and collaborate with students, faculty, practitioners and families. School nurses use evidence based interventions and advocate for all aspects of a students’ well-being.
School Nurses:
- Promote health through nursing assessment
- Provide care in both routine and emergent issues for students and staff
- Prevent life threatening situations
What does a school nurse do?
- Triage student health concerns
- Assess physical and emotional issues
- Provide Nursing Diagnosis – related to the student’s response to a medical condition
- Provide primary healthcare to students and staff including first aid and chronic condition care
- Counsel students on health and emotional issues
- Administer medication on a daily and as needed basis
- Refer health issues to healthcare providers for further care and treatment as needed
- Provide health screenings – vision, hearing and scoliosis per State regulations
- Monitor health appraisals for NYS mandates and sports participation
- Write Emergency and Individualized Healthcare Plans
- Teach students to manage their own healthcare concerns
- Act as a liaison between the home and the student’s medical provider
