Description: The Social Studies Learning Community is a time for Social Studies leaders of the schools in our region to come together to discuss current trends in social studies instruction, continue to set priorities for future learning opportunities, build capacity to implement the NY Inspires plan, and to collaborate/share resources. It is a common time for professionals to grow together to ensure the success of people (staff and ultimately students) in our region. The goal of this group is to bring together Social Studies educators in grades K-12 two times per year for these sessions.
This initial meeting will include a presentation by Phillip White-Cree, Coordinator of Community Support and Outreach, Clarkson University. In preparation for the numerous events commemorating the Semiquincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we would like to take a look at the various perspectives on the American Revolution. Mr. White-Cree will share the history of Indigenous Peoples in New York State, the Revolutionary War from their perspective, and its impact on the current day. This discussion will include a review of the curriculum, which consists of the Haudenosaunee history of New York, proposed in the 1990s but not adopted. As part of his collaboration, he will share resources available and recommended for further discussions of these perspectives. CVES School Support Services has partnered with the Clinton County Historical Association to provide this look at the various perspectives of the American Revolution.
In addition to this presentation, we will look at the role social studies classrooms play in implementing Computer Science and Digital Fluency standards and how AI is used. Time will be devoted to discussing the role of social studies in the newly adopted Portrait of a Graduate.
Target Audience: Social Studies Teachers, K-12
