Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI)

teacher of visually impaired2CVES’s Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) provides the following services. The services listed are some of the more frequent services provided but is not a complete listing. Services are individualized to the student as no two students are the same.

  • Performs Functional Visual Assessments, Learning Media Assessments and assists in Alternate Learning Assessments
  • Interprets medical reports, as they pertain to educational needs, for all school personnel and family members
  • Consults with all school personnel, parents, and students
  • Consults on a regular basis with the New York State Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired and other agencies to meet students’ needs
  • Provides brailed materials and modified materials for tests and to classroom staff to meet all academic needs
  • Participates in team meetings
  • Provides information, to the team, for assistive technology devices
  • Provides strategies for visually impaired students to be successful in the classroom and home settings
  • Provides instruction in Braille/Compensatory skills, academics, assistive technology devices, social skills, Independent and adaptive living skills, recreational skills, communication skills, and self-advocacy skills
  • Provides training to school personnel and family members to better understand and meet the needs of the visually impaired students
  • Register students with all agencies which will support visually impaired needs (Commission f/t blind, Recordings f/t blind, Library of Congress)
  • Contributes to the development of the IEP
  • Provides support to Orientation and Mobility instructors and Rehabilitation Instructors
