Description: This four-part professional learning series will engage new teachers in developing their craft and using evidence-based methods to support student learning and growth. This series is suitable for teachers in their first three years of teaching or for those with more experience who could benefit from a collegial regional network supporting teaching excellence. Participants are expected to attend all four sessions. Jen Hesseltine will be joined by Dr. Amy Brambos, Educational Consultant, Enhancing Student Engagement Through Communication Skills Training, the Mountain Lake PBS EDU team, and other guests as appropriate to the needs of the 2026-2027 cohort of teachers. Marker Box Education is an initiative of K12 education consultant, Jen Hesseltine. Marker Box workshops for new and early-profession teachers are:
● Hands-on, interactive, and collaborative
● Teacher-centered and supportive
● Informative and resourceful
Teachers walk away from sessions with strategies and routines that are transformative, 21st-century-focused, and mindful of a new generation of students. The time new teachers spend with us throughout the year will include facilitated, hands-on workshop time to apply new strategies, routines, and practices with the guidance and support of workshop facilitators.
Themes in the year-long cohort include:
● Communication strategies for building professional relationships with students, families, colleagues, administrators, and the community
● Strategies and routines for student engagement and learning, classroom management, time management, and challenging behaviors
● The overall shifts in NYS learning standards (across all content areas and grade bands) and what they mean for teaching and learning, as well as new NYSED Graduation Measures and Portrait of a Graduate initiative updates
● Student-centered learning with natural, real-world, connections to the community
● The principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and the design of learning activities that provide multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression
● Connections between basic human needs (Maslow) and the types of tasks and activities we provide for students (Bloom), and the impact on student academic and personal growth, confidence, and overall well-being
● Literacy in all grade levels and content areas
● Educational technologies and digital resources (and balancing the use of technology with traditional analog tools and other classroom resources)
● Culturally responsive pedagogy
● Resources and routines for professional growth, joy, and well-being as a teacher
● Topics as informed by the cohort of teachers
Intended For: Teachers in the first three years of service or those with more experience who could benefit from a collegial regional network supporting teaching excellence
