Workshop Description:

General Session on May 18 for Grades P-12

This day will focus on helping teachers understand what differentiation is and how to approach it as a philosophy of teaching, not as a scripted program. We will examine the different types of differentiation – content, process, product, and environmental – and determine when each is appropriate in the classroom. Included in this discussion will be the relevance of learning profiles, student readiness, and student interest/engagement. As part of the introduction, we will investigate how this generation of students is very different from those in the past and why these differences require differentiation. Teachers will model some high impact/low preparation strategies that assist in differentiating the learning process. These strategies will be easy for teachers to implement and offer an engaging way to begin establishing a differentiated environment.

Leveled Sessions on May 19 (Grades P-5) and May 20 (Grades 6 – 12)

The content will be the same for both days but the examples and modeling will be focused on elementary needs one day and secondary needs the next. This session will offer a practical structure for implementing components of the differentiated classroom, to include:

  • assignments that offer student choice – RAFTs , Think-Tac-Toes, learning contracts, etc.
  • the effective use of anchor activities as a management tool, with specific activities modeled
  • the tiering of lessons, with a tiered assignment modeled to illustrate how tiering is implemented and managed
  • the importance of flexible grouping, with suggestions on when and how each type of group can be utilized
  • the role that questioning plays in differentiation
  • how summative and formative assessment is addressed in a differentiated environment and different ways to offer assessment
  • additional strategies to place more of the responsibility for the learning process on the shoulders of students, allowing teachers to assume the role of facilitator

*Cost for districts not participating in the School Improvement CoSer 506 is estimated at $450.00
Lunch provided. All estimated costs are based on 20 participants. Costs will be adjusted once registration is closed.
