Workshop Description:

Reflective Practices are a critical component of all healthy organizations, especially those who serve children and families.

Educational leaders who require a routine self-examination of their staff’s (and their own) actions, personal theories, decision-making processes, values, and implicit biases, will improve the functioning of both students and the workforce.  Real change lies not in simply trying to teach the workforce new strategies and interventions to work with students, but to impact, and alter, staff’s ideas and beliefs about the work.

One of the most promising outcomes of Reflective Practices is improving the resilience of both the workforce and student body.

In this workshop, we will first situate the importance of Reflective Practices by reviewing the core concepts of Trauma-informed Schools.  Then, our focus will turn to defining Reflective Practices, providing rationales for their use, and discussing ways to integrate them into your school(s).

Teaching methods for this workshop will include lecture, small group and individual activities, and video.

Participants will be asked to do some personal/professional reflecting to provide some firsthand experience of some of the methods associated with Reflective Practices.  As always, when doing activities that are self-reflective, each person ultimately chooses his or her level of participation. However, taking a step past one’s typical comfort level will be encouraged.
