Special programs for hearing impaired and deaf students are provided in local school districts for students age 5 - 21. Students identified by the Committee on Special Education as hearing impaired and/or deaf are referred to this total communication program.
The goal of the program for students enrolled is to develop optimum competency in the communication modes of speech, speech reading, audition, signing, finger spelling, reading, and writing for the purpose of maximum use of the English language. Students receive this service within regular school buildings and classes in order to enable the students to participate in mainstreaming according to individual abilities.
Students will be provided the support of the teacher of the deaf, a speech therapist, an interpreter, and counseling is requested. A full spectrum of other related services will be available as required by the Individual Education Plan (IEP). This program is available as a CVES service or on an itinerant service.
