Tobacco-Free Schools

What is the Program?

This statewide program is designed to help schools strengthen/create their Comprehensive Tobacco Free Policy in order to develop a healthy, smoke free learning environment. The program includes:

  1. Evaluation/creation of a Comprehensive Tobacco Free Policy
  2. Offering prevention/cessation curriculum resources and staff trainings in tobacco prevention and cessation
  3. Connecting schools to community resources and supporting community involvement in schools

Why should schools be involved?

Tobacco use is still one of the leading causes of death in the United States. 82 % of smokers begin smoking before their 18th birthday. As community leaders, our school districts have unique opportunity to influence students and help to promote tobacco use prevention, cessation, and education.

Where is this program offered & when will it be available?

This program is available to school districts in Clinton, Essex, Franklin and Hamilton counties.

This is an ongoing program through out New York State funded through State grants. The CVES Tobacco Training Specialist will support participating school districts wishing to improve their Comprehensive Tobacco Free Policies. Support may include: curriculum resources, funding, technical assistance, and training opportunities.

Who can participate?

Each year schools within Franklin, Essex, Hamilton, and Clinton counties will be added to the program. Students, community, school personnel, parents, public health community members and others will work in collaboration to create policies that enhance the learning and understanding of tobacco and its negative effects on the student population.
