What are the GED tests?

The GED tests are a nationally recognized assessment that gives people from all walks of life an opportunity to certify their high school education. The high school credential earned by passing the GED tests is accepted by more than 95% of U.S. employers, colleges, and universities. For many GED holders, these tests are a first step toward better jobs, further training, or higher education.

Content of the GED Tests

The GED Tests are organized into five subject areas:

  1. Language Arts, Writing
  2. Language Arts, Reading
  3. Social Studies
  4. Science
  5. Mathematics

The Language Arts, Writing Test has two parts. Part I requires candidates to demonstrate the ability to revise and edit workplace and informational documents by answering 50 multiple-choice questions. Part II measures the candidate's ability to write an essay. Essay topics are generally based on a personal observation or an opinion.

The Language Arts, Reading Test consists of excerpts from fiction and nonfiction. Each excerpt is followed by multiple-choice questions about the reading material. There are 40 questions on this part.

The Social Studies Test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that measure general social studies concepts. The questions are based on short readings, which may include a map, graph, chart, cartoon, or figure.

The Science Test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that measure general science concepts. The questions are based on short readings, which may include a map, graph, chart, cartoon, or figure.

The Mathematics Test is divided into two parts. On the first part, the candidate is allowed to use a calculator. The 50-question test measures a candidate's ability in number operations, measurement and geometry, data analysis, and algebra.
